About

I work at the intersection of yachts, marine technology, entrepreneurship, and the ocean economy.

A marine professional who connects brokerage, yacht development, technology, and the broader ocean economy.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

I am Junjie Bao (Joey Bao), a Dubai-based yacht consultant, broker, entrepreneur, and marine industry professional.

For more than a decade, my work has been centered around yachts and the wider marine industry. But I have never seen yachting simply as the business of buying and selling boats.

To me, a yacht is where design, engineering, manufacturing, finance, technology, logistics, hospitality, tourism, and human behavior come together.

That broader perspective has shaped the way I work and the projects I choose to build.

What I Do

My professional work spans several connected areas.

Superyacht & Yacht Brokerage

Advising owners, buyers, investors, and industry partners on yacht acquisition, sales, new construction, and project opportunities.

New Build & Yacht Development

Working across concept development, product definition, shipyard selection, construction strategy, and commercial positioning.

Explorer & Fishing Vessels

Developing practical vessel concepts focused on exploration, offshore fishing, long-range cruising, diving, and self-sufficient operation.

Marine Technology & Data

Exploring how data, AI, and digital tools can improve the way vessels are searched, evaluated, surveyed, managed, bought, sold, and operated.

Marine Business & Investment

Studying opportunities across yacht brands, shipyards, marine manufacturing, infrastructure, and related businesses.

The Coastal & Ocean Economy

Researching the much larger economic ecosystem surrounding the sea — from boatbuilding and marinas to tourism, logistics, technology, manufacturing, and coastal development.

These activities may appear different on the surface. I see them as parts of the same ecosystem.

How I Think

I am fundamentally a problem-solving and product-oriented person.

When I encounter a new opportunity, my starting point is usually not:

“How can this be sold?”

It is:

“What is the actual problem here, and is there a better way to solve it?”

I prefer to understand reality before forming conclusions.

That means looking at the market, the technology, the economics, the users, the operational environment, and the people involved.

I believe in evidence, practical testing, and continuous adjustment.

Not every good idea is ready for the market. Sometimes the direction is right but the timing is wrong. Sometimes the technology is ready but the business model is not. Sometimes the market exists, but the product is solving the wrong problem.

Understanding these differences is an important part of building something that can survive in the real world.

From Ideas to Real Projects

I enjoy the entire process of turning an idea into something tangible.

It can start with a simple observation:

“There should be a better way to do this.”

From there, I like to investigate the market, define the problem, develop a concept, find the right people and resources, build a prototype or business model, and put it into the real world.

This is why I remain interested in projects beyond traditional brokerage.

A boat can become a product.

A product can become a company.

A company can become a platform.

And the knowledge created along the way can become the foundation for the next project.

Why I Work Across Multiple Projects

I have never been particularly interested in limiting myself to a single narrow category.

My interests range from superyachts and expedition vessels to aluminum boatbuilding, marine technology, vessel data, fishing, shipyards, yacht brands, and the wider ocean economy.

I see these areas as interconnected.

Experience gained from a yacht project can influence a vessel-development project. A manufacturing problem can reveal a technology opportunity. A customer requirement can become a new product concept. A data problem in yacht brokerage can lead to a completely new digital platform.

This cross-disciplinary approach allows ideas, knowledge, people, and resources from different parts of the marine industry to interact.

The challenge is not to do everything.

The challenge is to understand which opportunities deserve commitment, which should remain experiments, and which should be left alone.

That distinction becomes increasingly important as projects grow.

Independence & Long-Term Value

I value independence — not simply as the freedom to work for myself, but as the ability to decide what problems are worth solving and what projects are worth pursuing.

For me, financial success is ultimately a means to create more freedom, more choices, and more opportunities to build.

I would rather create something meaningful than simply participate in something successful.

And I believe the most valuable outcomes are those that continue to create value after the original project is finished.

That may be a yacht. It may be a company. It may be a technology platform. It may be knowledge shared with another person. Or it may be a team capable of continuing the work without depending entirely on one individual.

Looking Ahead

The maritime industry is entering a period of significant change.

New technologies, new forms of data, changing customer behavior, new manufacturing methods, electrification, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and the growing importance of coastal and ocean economies are changing how we think about vessels and the businesses around them.

I want to participate in that transition — not simply by observing it, but by building things within it.

My long-term objective is to combine industry experience, practical knowledge, technology, entrepreneurship, and a global network to develop ideas that can become real businesses, useful products, and lasting assets.

I do not believe every idea needs to become a company.

But I do believe good ideas deserve to be tested.

And the ones that survive contact with reality deserve to be built.

A Simple Philosophy

01

Explore

Look beyond the obvious.

02

Understand

Separate assumptions from reality.

03

Build

Turn ideas into something tangible.

04

Test

Let the real world provide the evidence.

05

Learn

Use every project to increase knowledge.

06

Improve

Keep changing when the evidence demands it.

07

Build Again

Because one meaningful project should become the foundation for the next.

What I Am Building

My current interests increasingly extend beyond individual yacht transactions toward products, platforms, and organizations that can create long-term value within the marine and ocean economy.

Some of these projects focus on vessels and yacht development. Others explore marine data, artificial intelligence, digital platforms, fishing and exploration, or the business infrastructure surrounding the maritime industry.

I am particularly interested in the space between what exists today and what the industry will need next.

"That night, one question kept turning in my mind: What if it hadn't been Omani fishermen who found us?"

A 36-foot sportfisher. Returning to port at dusk, one engine suddenly died. The coast guard said: this isn't life-threatening — you still have one engine, bring yourselves back. So we did. One engine. Five knots. From dusk until after midnight — nearly eight hours.

"In those eight hours, the entire world shrank to a single question: would this one remaining engine hold?"

Maritime Assets ≠ Yachts

A yacht's value is determined by brand, engineering, supply chain, capital, data, and people — not the hull itself.

Engineering Never Lies

Markets paint futures. Brands make promises. Capital raises expectations. Engineering states reality — and reality is the final judge.

Transparency → Maturity

The yacht industry doesn't lack data. It lacks a system that teaches data how to think together. Opacity is the industry's greatest hidden cost.

Brand = Future Liquidity

A brand's core value is not marketing — it is the liquidity guarantee at exit. Brands die faster than hulls ever will.

Broker。The largest yacht brokerage of the future will likely be an AI software company first, not a traditional broker.

What will truly be expensive is not building a yacht, but maintaining the world's continued belief in it.
China will certainly build more high-end yachts — the real challenge is building globally recognized brand equity.
The yacht industry's profit differential will shift from craftsmanship gaps to cognition and information gaps.

All temporary industry advantages will disappear; only systems capability and data assets can survive across cycles.

Hardware specs define the present. What determines long-term value is the invisible system behind it — brand depth, supply chain stability, global service networks, active secondary markets, and the industry's long-term confidence.

A brand's core value is the liquidity guarantee at asset exit. Its essence isn't current fame — it's whether the market still recognizes that name when it's time to sell, ten years later.

Real growth is overturning your old self. Every self-reversal isn't a denial of the past — it's breaking through a cognitive boundary. Growth isn't stacking answers. It's having the courage to tell yourself: what you used to think — it's wrong now.

This Book Is Not About Yachts

Most people hear "yacht broker" and picture the same thing: a man in a suit standing before a white yacht, earning commission matching buyers with sellers. It's not entirely wrong. But the distance between that image and what I actually do is at least one ocean wide.

My understanding of boats didn't begin with transactions. It began in childhood. My grandparents ran shipping on the Yangtze River. My mother worked at a ship repair yard in Zhenjiang. From kindergarten, my after-school routine was walking through the yard, watching welders work, seeing damaged ships restored and launched again.

Over the following decade, I accumulated roughly four thousand hours of navigation across the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Indian Ocean. I didn't enter the yacht industry until 2019. In other words: I became someone who truly understood, loved, and lived on boats — before I ever became a "yacht broker."

A Note from the Author

I didn't write this book to prove I saw the future first.
I wrote it so that when more and more people turn toward the ocean,
they won't just see boats —
they'll see the vast, rigorous, endlessly generative world of systems behind them.

Joey Junjie Bao —

Yacht consultant, broker and entrepreneur based in Dubai. A marine professional working at the intersection of yachts, marine technology, entrepreneurship and the ocean economy. Founder of New Yachting (yacht brokerage, purchase, charter and advisory, Dubai — https://www.xinyouting.com/) and TideMaster (aluminum expedition yacht brand, flagship CAT38). Initiator of BoatFacts (AI-driven vessel data infrastructure). Author of two books.

THE COASTAL & OCEAN ECONOMY —

By Joey Junjie Bao (鲍俊杰). A first-person intellectual work on maritime industries, published 2026.

Core thesis: A yacht is not a standalone product — it is the visible outcome of an invisible system. Maritime assets are the compound of brand, engineering, supply chain, capital, data, operations, IP, and people. The ocean is not merely geography; it is the next great asset class.

Four Parts

Part I — Seeing the Ocean: Why oceans matter, the coastal vs ocean economy distinction, the invisible industry, and why Dubai is the optimal hub.

Part II — Seeing the System: Information opacity, the broker vs advisor distinction, Maritime Asset Theory, Explorer Yacht Thesis, Support Vessel, Aluminum, Engineering honesty, global shipyards, brand as future liquidity, and the Joey Bao Method for company analysis.

Part III — Seeing the Future: Career-changing questions, BoatFacts and AI-driven data infrastructure, questions worth asking, and a time-capsule vision for 2030-2040.

Part IV — Seeing Myself: Personal near-death sea experiences, building TideMaster CAT38, the Family Office perspective, 100 predictions, 20 principles, things the author changed his mind about, and a letter to future partners.

(Expedition Yachts — The New Icon of the Yachting World)

By Joey Junjie Bao (鲍俊杰). Published 2024. The first comprehensive guide to explorer yachts written for the Chinese-language market — 336 pages, full color, bilingual Chinese and English. Free to read at https://www.tanxianyouting.com/ebook.html

Four chapters: History and Foundations (what defines an explorer yacht, the evolution of exploration at sea, ancient Chinese navigation and shipbuilding, the European origins of yachting and research vessels, the 21st-century explorer boom); Design and Construction (hull materials, propulsion, galley, water and power systems, HVAC, stabilization, safety equipment, shipyard selection and project management, navigation and communication, helicopter and tender configuration); Operations and Management (building and running a captain and crew team, the world's leading expedition destinations from Indonesia to the polar regions, maintenance and voyage logs, risk assessment, hull and crew insurance planning, annual operating costs); Development and Trends (hybrid and new-energy propulsion, environmentally responsible construction and sustainable materials, the rise of the Asian market and China's domestic opportunity, and the road to smarter, more connected expedition yachts).

Key Concepts

Maritime Asset Theory: A yacht's value comes from its supporting system — brand, engineering, supply chain, capital, management, data, talent — not the hull alone.

Harbor Yachts vs. Systemic Expedition Yachts: Two fundamentally different design philosophies; one optimized for dockside presence, the other for sustained ocean operations.

Joey Bao Method (鲍氏推演法): A seven-layer framework — Vision → Management → Engineering → Supply Chain → Capital → Brand → Future — for evaluating maritime companies.

Coastal Economy vs. Ocean Economy: Coastal is lifestyle and consumption; Ocean is production and civilizational infrastructure.

The Smiling Curve in Yachting: Chinese shipyards are trapped in the low-margin manufacturing middle while European firms capture design and brand premiums at both ends.

About the Author

Joey Junjie Bao (鲍俊杰 / Joey Bao). Based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. 4,000+ hours at sea across the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman and Indian Ocean. Founder of New Yachting FZE LLC (Dubai yacht brokerage, purchase, charter and advisory — https://www.xinyouting.com/) and TideMaster (aluminum expedition yacht brand, flagship CAT38, developed with Shandong Nawi Marine Technology). Initiator of BoatFacts (AI-driven vessel data infrastructure). Author of THE COASTAL & OCEAN ECONOMY (2026, in Chinese, English and Arabic) and 探险游艇——游艇行业新宠儿 / EXPEDITION YACHTS — THE NEW ICON OF THE YACHTING WORLD (2024, 336 pages, bilingual Chinese-English, https://www.tanxianyouting.com/ebook.html). Yacht consultant specializing in sales, new build, explorer yachts, support vessels, maritime brand M&A, and AI in yachting.

100 Predictions (Selected)

001: The largest yacht brokerage in the future will first be a software company, not a traditional broker.

002: The 299GT segment will become the most competitive Explorer Yacht category in the next decade.

003: Support Vessels will eventually have their own client base, design language, and secondary market.

004: Future yacht competition will be about who has the most complete global service system, not who builds the prettiest boats.

006: The most valuable maritime enterprises won't own the most ships — they'll own the most data.

010: What will truly be expensive is not building a yacht, but maintaining the world's continued belief in it.

088: The industry will clearly separate: yachts are consumer goods; maritime assets are allocation goods.

100: All temporary industry advantages will disappear; only systems and data assets can survive across cycles.
